Helenvale Urban Renewal Project moved to Mandela Bay Development Agency

The Nelson Mandela Bay Council has approved the transfer of responsibility together with the staff and funds for the Helenvale Urban Renewal Project (HURP) to the Mandela Bay Development Agency.
The Helenvale project was launched in 2007 following a visit by then President Thabo Mbeki and a recent study suggests that there could be as many as 30 000 people living in the suburb, although the 2001 Census put the figure at 14 600.

Construction begins at Nelson Mandela Bay's Premier Beach

The Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), an arm of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has already begun with the start of its latest capital project, phase one of the Kings Beach environmental upgrade on the Kings Beach triangle which stretches for the super tubes in Humewood and ends at Mc Arthurs Bath Swimming Pools. Nelson Mandela Bay residents and tourists alike can expect to see a new and improved Kings Beach, by the end July, 2012, the end of the current financial year.

A Celebration of Mixed Heritages

One of the projects initiated by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), in its overall plan of urban regeneration in Port Elizabeth, is the rehabilitation of the Donkin Reserve. The Donkin Reserve, which was a gathering place for the Xhosa leaders and their people and later dedicated to all the citizens of the metro as a public open space, has seen serious urban decay over the past couple of years, which also had a negative impact on the buildings and economy around the Donkin precinct.

The MBDA doing it's part

In 2008 the MBDA commissioned a plan for the regeneration of the Donkin Reserve, which is at the heart of the inner-city, that would serve as a catalyst transforming the face of the city of Port Elizabeth, creating a new heritage for all citizens; and a project which contributes to the branding of Nelson Mandela Bay, both nationally and internationally. Arts and culture, urban design and the crafts were seen as the key agents of delivery, definition and story telling within this place-making project.
