KINGS BEACH REDEVELOPMENT
MBDA is currently in the process of awarding a tender for a makeover of the Friendly City's premier beachfront area, King's Beach. An RFP was issued inviting consortia of specialist consultants in the fields of urban design/landscape architecture, civil engineering and transportation planning to review existing plans for the King's Beach area and then to prepare fresh plans for the area's redevelopment as well as to oversee the implementation thereof.
The net result it is hoped, will be the re-creation of one of the jewels in the City's tourism crown, attracting not only the spending power of outside visitors but drawing the City's own residents to enjoy and appreciate the area again.
As a first phase, the project is expected to begin with the re-landscaping of the park area of King's Beach. The value of the first phase will be in the order of R10 million and is planned to be completed in the current financial year.
Later phases will look at further landscaping elements as well as considering the provision of more parking to better serve this entire section of the southern beachfront by rerouting through-traffic along Strandfontein Road and accommodating more parking in the southbound land of Beach Road/Marine Drive.
