MBDA STAFF MOBILIZE TO CLEAR MOORE DYKE SITE AND REVIVE STALLED PROJECT

MBDA STAFF MOBILIZE TO CLEAR MOORE DYKE SITE AND REVIVE STALLED PROJECT:

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium staff have commenced clearing the pitch at the Moore Dyke site.

The Mandela Bay Development Agency has demonstrated its commitment to getting the stalled Moore Dyke project back on track by mobilizing internal staff capacity to undertake clearing activities on site. The ongoing work includes the clearing of the pitch within the sports complex, completed entirely by staff of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The initiative marks a proactive step towards addressing the challenges that have hindered progress on the project and signals the Agency’s renewed determination to see it revived and brought to fruition. Work is underway to establish a clear and practical plan for completing the outstanding work and restoring the facility for the benefit of the community.

A stakeholder engagement meeting in October 2026 brought together community builders and stakeholders who share a commitment to the future of Moore Dyke and the role it plays in the sporting and social life of the surrounding communities. The meeting provided an opportunity to acknowledge the concerns and frustrations of the community regarding the prolonged delay in the project and to discuss the actions required to address the outstanding challenges. Immediate priorities include the verification of the remaining scope and cost of the work and an assessment of the extent of site damage and vandalism. A Quantity Surveyor has been retained to engage with the affected SMMEs and to secure the resources required to appoint a contractor to complete the project.

It was during this meeting that the possibility of rehabilitating the sports pitches for use by the community was discussed, subject to technical assessments, funding availability and the necessary health, safety and security requirements. The meeting further emphasized the importance of meaningful community involvement, as well as improved site security and a sustainable management arrangement for the facility once construction is complete.

The MBDA recognizes the importance of Moore Dyke to local schools, sports clubs and the wider community. The Agency remains committed to working with the relevant stakeholders to restore confidence in the project and ensure that the facility can serve its intended purpose. Further updates will be provided as the outstanding assessments, stakeholder engagements and funding processes move forward. A firm implementation timeline will be communicated once the remaining scope of work, costs and funding arrangements have been confirmed.

The MBDA thanks the community and stakeholders for their continued engagement and commitment to the future of Moore Dyke Sports Centre.
