NMB Stadium Noise Mitigation Measures

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium’s Commercial and Safety and Security teams met with representatives of the City’s Public Health Directorate and Ward 5 Councillor, Ms Teri Stander, earlier today (22 October 2026)  for a constructive and productive engagement on noise mitigation measures.

All parties are in agreement that a series of measures will be implemented to monitor and minimise noise levels, both for the upcoming event and at future events.

As part of these measures, the stage will be repositioned to back onto the IMATU building on Prince Alfred Road. This configuration will direct sound into the Stadium structure, with the building providing an additional barrier to help limit noise reaching the surrounding areas.

Speakers will be angled downwards at 45 degrees to direct sound towards the ground rather than outwards, thereby reducing the potential impact on neighbouring areas. An additional key measure will be the deployment of sound-monitoring equipment by both the Stadium and the City’s Public Health Directorate. Noise meters will be positioned at strategic locations, extending as far as Mount Road and Greenacres, to monitor sound levels and assess compliance with the conditions of the City-issued permit.

Sound levels will be monitored continuously throughout the event, with readings communicated to the sound engineers every 30 minutes. This will enable timely adjustments, where necessary, to ensure that noise levels remain within the permitted limits.

The MBDA is committed to ensure compliance with all public health requirements at all times whilst ensuring the sustainability and commercial viability of the Stadium. Every event that the MBDA hosts brings in direct and indirect benefits to various stakeholders including artist, traders, hospitality, and job creation for the hundreds of casual workers.
