Science for a sustainable future: Leaners can dive head first into STEMI this holiday at the STC
The Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre (STC) in Kariega is excited to invite learners from Grade R to Grade 11 to its upcoming Holiday Programme, from 31 March to 2 April 2026. This three day interactive programme will give learners the chance to explore science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI) in a fun, hands on way, all while learning how science can help build a sustainable future for our city.
The programme will focus on three key themes:
Day 1: Water Education*
Day 2: Energy Education*
Day 3: Waste & Food Security*
Learners will take part in age-appropriate, creative activities and demonstrations aligned to each theme. They will even get to take home items they make themselves, including a DIY water filter and compost with seeds to start their own potting garden.
βSchool holidays are the perfect time to give learners extra support in STEMI education, in ways that are fun, practical, and engaging,β Singathwa Poswa, Research, Innovation & Sustainability Manager at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre. βOur past holiday programmes have been a great success, with learners leaving with new skills but also with excitement about science. This year, our team is thrilled to share the fun of STEMI once again and to show how science connects to everyday life and the future of our city.β
The STC holiday programme is designed to make science accessible and enjoyable, while helping learners see how STEMI can address real world challenges such as water conservation, energy use, and food security. By engaging young minds in this way, the STC continues to support the development of Nelson Mandela Bay as a hub of innovation and sustainability.
