PROJECT DETAILS:
The demolition of Bayworld ensured that the safety of both people and animals has been safeguarded.
The temporary holding facility meets the highest international standards, including those set by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the South African National Standard for zoos in the country (SANS 10379:2005).
The operations of Bayworld remain the responsibility of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government’s Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
The foundation has now been laid for informed decisions to be made about the next steps for the Bayworld complex

The Bayworld project began with the demolition of condemned structures, including the Tropical House and associated buildings, which posed safety risks. These demolitions were completed and the site has been stabilised.
Further assessments of the site revealed significant deterioration in adjacent structures, particularly the Tropical House, which required urgent intervention before other work could continue. Expert reviews also found extensive damage to the pools, with repair costs exceeding available resources for the current phase.
Prior to the completion of the current phase, the MBDA promoted investment opportunities through a roadshow. However, progress depends on a Public Private Partnership led by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government. The MBDA is not currently mandated to pursue such initiatives independently.
Day‑to‑day operations of Bayworld remain the responsibility of the Eastern Cape Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. Future work depends on stakeholders renewing the framework agreement, extending the MBDA’s mandate, and securing capital investment.
The current phase was completed. Responsibility for the next steps has been handed back to the Bayworld Board of Trustees.
