Baakens Bridge

The MBDA is currently building South Africa’s first composite and steel material pedestrian bridge over the Baakens river. The R 10 million Baakens River Pedestrian Bridge will serve to connect the movement of pedestrians from Vuyisile Mini Square to the Baakens River Precinct in order to unlock the parking potential on the north bank of the river. The Agency is going to use composite materials due to their environmental, strength and versatile characteristics. Eight entry level SMME's that will do civil, paving, retaining walls and wheelchair ramp have benefited with over R 2,5 million worth of contracts. The bridge will provide a safe walking route for pedestrians and slightly alleviate the parking congestion currently experienced by the City.
