Singaphi Environment Upgrade

The Mandela Bay Development Agency and community celebrated the completion of the R40 million Singaphi Street environmental upgrade programme in New Brighton on Thursday. This project is the first major intervention by the MBDA to the townships of Nelson Mandela Bay since the Agency was established primarily to focus on Central Business District rejuvenation. The MBDA celebrated the milestone with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which have been integral in the delivery of the project. SME’s working on the environmental upgrade were inspired by the Route 67 development in the inner city. The Agency ensured that 15 local SME contractors have benefited with over R11 m worth of contracts carried out by locals. The community of New Brighton expressed genuine gratitude towards the MBDA for providing them with opportunities of growth. The Singaphi Street upgrades include a newly surfaced road from Ferguson Road up to Olaf Palme Street. The environmental upgrading of Singaphi street also includes Public Art, Street Furniture, Children’s Play Parks, Traffic Education Cycling Park a Sports Training Park as well as possibilities for vendor trading areas and landscaping.
